Background & Research

Background & Research

A doctor owned an old, rarely-used house in Yogyakarta and envisioned transforming it into a modern women's boarding house. The challenge was to do this without a massive renovation budget, yet completely transform the building's dated look into a highly comfortable, modern living space.

Design & Development

Design & Development

We responded with this contemporary concept, which successfully eliminated the old-fashioned feel. The use of a metal double-skin (painted galvalume and hollow steel frames) was our budget-friendly solution that dramatically modernized the home's facade. By thoughtfully planning within the constraints of the old house's footprint and existing rooms, I successfully designed a compact yet very comfortable boarding house for its future tenants.

The façade expresses a rhythmic play of vertical textured panels that wrap the main volume, light in appearance, yet ensuring privacy for residents. Warm wooden elements and soft lighting on the ground level evoke comfort and a sense of belonging. The interlocking sloped roofs not only enrich the composition but also enhance natural airflow and protection against tropical weather. The result is an elegant and efficient women’s residence, contextual, refined, and deeply attuned to contemporary urban living.
