Background & Research
Background & Research
A housing developer wanted a design for a 60 sqm subsidized housing unit that would be officially supported by the government. Since it was subsidized housing, the design needed to be highly cost-effective for every unit. However, the developer also wanted a unique subsidized home that stood out, specifically with a Japanese aesthetic.

To meet this goal, I designed a Japanese minimalist concept using natural stone grids and circular ornaments on the facade. The use of a textured wall finish (like kampret texture) was a low-cost solution to break the monotony of the facade. The color palette perfectly supports the chosen concept, making this building unique and distinct from other subsidized housing projects. The overall area was also crucial in supporting the Japanese atmosphere, which we achieved by adding Japanese-style vegetation and harmonious garden spaces.

The minimalist approach is expressed through clean roof geometry, the use of natural materials like exposed brick and wood, and zen-inspired vegetation that evokes serenity. Every element is designed efficiently while preserving aesthetic balance and comfort, resulting in homes that feel warm, functional, and full of character, even on a compact footprint.
